Educators’ Emergency VAX Treatment (Dr. Craig Blewett)

Step 2 - Activate the content to encourage learning

Welcome to Step 2 of the VAX treatment plan. If you did not begin with Step 0 - Before you VAX then click the link to start there. Step 1 - Virtual-friendly content creation, will allow you to move your content online, however, teaching is more than content dissemination and simply addressing the consumption aspect of learning. To make our teaching more effective we need to apply the ACT pedagogies to our content. There are many ways we can go about ACTivating our teaching, and these approaches are covered in my comprehensive online course. In this emergency VAX guide I will focus on using 3 of the 5 ACT pedagogies (Curation, Conversation, Correction)

Pedagogy of Curation
Activating learning by students finding, selecting, and arranging their own content.
  • Online Notes: Get your students to find websites and online material around your topic and upload these to a shared folder
  • Online Slides: Get your students to curate a collection of images/content into an online slideshow
  • Online videos: Get students to create a playlist of videos around your topic and write a summary explaining what the playlist is about.

Pedagogy of Conversation
Activating learning by students explaining, discussing, and debating learning content.
  • Online Notes: Turn commenting on in your Google doc or Word Online doc and encourage students to have a conversation around the content
  • Online Slides: Turn commenting on in your Google slides or PowerPoint online slides and encourage students to have a conversation around the content
  • Online videos: Turn commenting on for your YouTube video and ask students a question and get them to reply in the comments
  • Other: Use Google Classroom or Teams to setup an online discussion forum or have an easy-to-do adhoc meet-up using http://tlk.io

Pedagogy of Correction
Activating learning by students learning through both their own and others’ mistakes.
  • Online Notes: Get students to collaborative create an online document around content and use version history to track their changes
  • Online Slides: Get students to collaboratively create an online slideshow around content and use version history to track their changes
  • Online videos: Add a layer of questions to your videos using apps like PlayPosit or Spiral
  • Other: Create a fun online multiple choice test using Kahoot (you can use "Create Challenge" mode to deliver remotely)
