An appropriate Digital Pedagogy - Call it pedagogy, andragogy, heutagogy, or any other *gogy's, the bottom line is that we need a new approach to #teaching and #learning online. Simply using #existing approaches to #teaching and #learning in a new space is going to rob us of the opportunities presented by #digital media.

Developing a new Digital Pedagogy- Simply taking our #old approaches and attempting to apply them in the new media spaces means we are robbing ourselves and our students of new #learning opportunities. Arising out of my PhD research entitled "Learning in a Facebook Environment - The Writing is on the Wall" were key #principles that point to a new #digital #pedagogy. Developing an appropriate #pedagogy is based on three layers - an inner #paradigm, new #principles and finally new #pedagogic devices.

The Paradigm - The core of a new approach is the #paradigm that guides our perspectives of #teaching and #learning. Ken Robinson explains how current #education is built on an #Industrial #paradigm. This is a #paradigm based on control, order, sequence, batching, etc. that is common in most school systems. However, as Ken Robinson argues, this system can't be changed it has to be rebuilt. In other words, the core or central #paradigm has to change. Simply putting a few #iPads in classrooms, or lauding the use of #eBooks at a school, will as has been seen, not allow us to effectively use new #technology in #teaching and #learning. The central #paradigm needs to move from an #Industrial #paradigm to an #Organic paradigm, where this paradigm is about change, adaption, and connection.

The Principles - Surrounding the core #organic paradigm, are a set of principles. These principles are based on two indissoluble elements - power and learning, as Habermas (1987) says, “The formation of power and the formation of knowledge compose an indissoluble unity.” The power principles relate to a #learner-centric rather than a #teacher-centric approach, and a move away from #autocracy, or even #democracy, towards #homeocracy. The #learning principles reflect a move away from #prospective sense to #retrospective meaning. Finally learning is firmly embedded in the interplay between of #vulnerability and #validation.

The Pedagogies - Based on the core #organic paradigm and the key #principles, are four #pedagogic devices that are appropriate to a #digital world. The first is a move from a #pedagogy of #consumption towards one of #creation. The second is a move from #content to #conversation. The third is a move from #correct to #correcting. The final move is from #control to #chaos. Each of the new pedagogic approaches interplays with the others to a lesser or greater extent depending on the teachers adherence to the #principles and core #paradigm.

Pedagogy of this Website - It is one thing to talk about #pedagogy, it is another to apply it. I run #courses that will help you apply the #digital #principles and #pedagogies discussed here in your #teaching. However I have also attempted to apply them in this site, within the constraints of the design tool I have. For example I've used #chunking of small content units which are easier to consume. Each page has a discussion space for #conversation. While there is some order the hyperlinks encourage a self-directed #chaotic experience of the content. In fact some of the links branch out to #searches, encouraging even more self-directed #chaotic discovery. Besides the discussion forum, there is also a link to a #wiki where users can #create and #correct content related to #e-learning. And finally I have maintained both in the site header and in discussion that this is a #beta site and through #conversation and #creation we are in a constant state of #correcting as we #learn together.
