Activity 4 - Education Technology Assessment (ETA) Model

Activity Objectives
Now that we understand that we need a digital pedagogy, what can we do about it? It's one thing to know that we need a guiding pedagogy, it's another to find it. The issue is (until recently) no simple digital pedagogy has existed. But we will get to that soon. So, the problem is that we are failing with our implementations of technology in the classroom. However, like with all problems, before we try and prescribe a solution we need to diagnose the cause of the failure....just like we would if we visited a doctor. In this activity you will learn about the ACT model and self-assess your own use of technology in the classroom.

Step 1 - Self Diagnosis
The first step is for us to diagnose how we are using technology in our own teaching. Once we understand this we will be better able to prescribe a pedagogy to our teaching. The ETA model arose out of my research as a simple but powerful tool that can be used to assess how we use technology in the classroom. There are two dimensions. The first is the content that can either be based around consumption or production, and the second is the learning approach which is either passive or active. This means that your teaching can end up in one of four quadrants.

Let's begin by you completing a short ETA test to discover which type of teaching approach you are currently using.

Step 2 - Self Reflection

So what does your ETA score mean? The model below show the four ETA quadrants.
Picture

  1. Passive - Consumer (PC) : This is the most common approach to using technology in the classroom. This is where teachers use videos or ebooks, however the learning is often nothing more than passive consumption of content - much like it is without technology.
  2. Active - Consumer (AC) : Teachers sometimes realise how passive the PC approach is and try and make use of games or some apps in their teaching. However while these games often lead to more active learners, they typically do not result in any artefact being produced.
  3. Passive - Producer (PP) : Another route taken by teachers is using social networks or smartboards in the classroom. However while these may result in some form of artefact being produced, such as the content on the smartboard being printed, the student involvement is often passive at best.
  4. Active - Producer (AP)  : The Active-Producer should be our goal when using technology for teaching and learning. Not only are the students active, and so realising all the benefits of active learning, but they also produce content which also has multiple benefits in learning.

Activities:
  1. Which quadrant is your EdTech currently primarily located in? Why?
  2. Think of one example of using technology that fits into each of the four quadrants.
  3. Read the following article that explores the issues we have covered around the problems facing schools and how we may be pursuing the completely wrong objective - The biggest mistake schools are making with technology
  4. What has the Productivity Paradox got to do with the big mistake schools are making?
